6 ways to get that summer feeling!

I’ve decided that I quite like April. The evenings are finally stretching that bit longer meaning that we can actually still have a bit of a life after the long, hard day’s slog; people are dusting off the lawn mowers and resurrecting their summer wardrobes; and almost everyone is in good form. The vitamin-D inspired endorphins don’t always last very long, so we’ll make the most of them while we can. While we wait for the sun to come and stay for keeps, there are plenty of ways to get that summer feeling!

1. Get your nails done at Tropical Popical. It’s affordable, quirky and the mani’s are great. Not to mention that it’s summer all the time here. Tropical Popical also feature a Disco Bar at weekends, where you can get disco-ready with their dry bar and make-up artist. And best of all, you can sip on a coconut full of lilt while you wait!

Check it out: Tropical Popical, 28 South William Street. http://www.tropicalpopical.com

2. Go on a picnic.
My other half doesn’t know it yet but the next sunny day that doesn’t involve either of us having to work will be my first
picnic of the season. He bought me a picnic basket for Christmas and I’ve yet to use it! It’s pink, comes with its own cutlery (and wine glasses) and it’s made from wicker. I know, it’s the real deal. How cute will I be? Just need a matching blanket now. And maybe some singing birds in the background, if it’s not too much to ask for.

3. Start wearing your sunglasses everywhere. Outdoors and in. On the bus or just cruising around. Even if tomorrow is a dull day, summer is all about choosing fashion over rationality. In fact, go and buy yourself a new pair! You deserve it. 🙂

4. Invest in a totally new shade of lipstick. My sights are set on a bright orange. It might seem like a scary shade and applied carelessly there’s a chance it could look like you’ve drank too much orange soda, but with the help of a pretty coral lip liner, it can turn out fabulously! I have it sitting patiently on my must buy list. My eye is on the Make Up For Ever (no surprise there) coral aqua lip liner and orange lipstick…

5. Choose your favourite summer smells and start indulging in them. Sun lotion, freshly cut grass and happiness. Apply some sun lotion even if you’re not heading away – it’s good for you to apply SPF daily anyway, plus it smells like the beach. It’s a win win situation!

6. Get a 99. I say that in all selflessness as I’m not a fan of ice cream but I know an Irish summer wouldn’t exist without the classic cone. If you’re an oddball, like me, pick up a loop the loop instead.

Hang on in there, summer’s a comin’!

Face of Fuschia

Image

I popped along to the final of the Face of Fuschia competition recently, where the funky make up brand was searching for the next face for it’s beauty campaign. I wasn’t there for the beauty this time though, instead I was there to support my friend/future sister-in-law Shannen Donohue!

Shannen had made it through to the shortlist through a Facebook voting campaign, and was one of just three girls to go through to the final stage, where they took part in a photo shoot. Unfortunately, she narrowly missed out on the winning title – but her picture is by far my favourite! The make up is incredible but the model is surely the next big thing 🙂

While we’re waiting for that to happen for her though, follow her on twitter – @shannendonohue and look up all her selfies on instagram too! #modelinthemaking

Fake it ’till you make it: Tan Review

20140423-221215.jpg

I used to be a massive tan addict, once upon a time, but believe it or not I’ve started embracing the whole milk-bottle look in more recent times. In saying that, while I might get away with it during the winter months, come the summertime a sneaky self-tan dose can go a long way.

As a kid I always managed to get a tan, but in recent years it doesn’t come so easy – a combination of spending sunny days in the office rather than the local playground, and loading factor 50 on my limbs when on holiday.

Either way, I’m realising (hoping) that my lack of colour in my twenties – and awareness of the importance of SPF – will pay off when I’m a little older!

Despite my new found appreciation of paleness however, there comes a time when my white legs would blind even those with the darkest of sunglasses so if I’m hoping to get my pins out this summer, I might need to dabble a little in the self-tanning department after all.

So I tried and tested two self-tans on the market in recent weeks to see what I’ll be using to fake it this summer. Firstly, I faked it ‘the natural way’, with NAKED Fake It Self Tan Lotion, before checking out TanOrganic’s Self-tan.

NAKED Fake It

What the experts say: Forget tan lines and white bits, this self tan lotion is suitable for face and body and contains a 100% natural tanning agent so you can get a natural golden tan without the sun.

What I reckon: I admit I was a little worried after my first application, as the tan seemed to fade after my shower the next morning. Even after the second application, I wasn’t sure I really noticed a difference. After my third application however, I suddenly realised I was developing a really nice, natural and even colour. Even my workmates commented on what a nice colour I had! So while I didn’t see an initial outcome, it developed really naturally, like a real tan would.

How to use: Apply to skin (I’d recommend with a mitt) and leave for 10 – 15 minutes before getting dressed. Tan will develop within 4 hours. Reapply every three to four days to maintain colour and deepen the shade.

Best Bits:
  • Enriched with shea butter and cocoa butter, meaning it leaves your skin really smooth and soft.
  • It’s fragranced with pink grapefruit blends along with orchid petals, amber and vanilla extracts. While I definitely got a hint of grapefruit – this tan smelt really fresh even after a night’s sleep!

For an added extra, check out NAKED’s Fake It Dust Me Mineral Shimmer Powder. It’s great for adding a bit of sun-kissed glamour to your tan – just sweep over your legs (great for elongating!), arms or décolletage to brighten and illuminate the skin. Like all NAKED products, it’s 100% natural and fragrance-free too! Both products available from http://www.nakedbodycare.co.uk/ 20140423-221209.jpg

Tan Organic

What the experts say: Tan Organic takes glow to a whole new level, giving superb, even colour, long lasting performance with a perfect fade.

What I reckon: Like most self-tans, Tan Organic glides on perfectly – once you’re using a tanning mitt. With the tan coming as a liquid formula, it tints the skin almost immediately, meaning you can see the areas you’ve missed in time to correct your mistakes! Although I forgot to exfoliate my elbows and knees before applying this tan (I was suffering from a mild case of exhaustion at the time, being a Thursday evening and all), I was pleasantly surprised at how even the tan developed over night!

How to use: Apply with a glove (Tan Organic have a majorly cute one – see below – but any mitt will do). Apply a small amount of the tan – about the size of a €2 coin – directly onto the glove and apply tan using gentle, circular motions. Leave hands and feet ’til last and apply what is left on the glove to those areas, to prevent unwanted clumps of tan.

Best Bits:
  • It’s the world’s first and only ECO-certified self-tanning brand.
  • It’s Irish – making it all the better (support local and all that!)
  • IT’s skin-loving formulation contains 87% certified organic ingredients with no harsh, synthetic nasties.
  • And it’s aloe-vera based formula is anti-agening AND ultra-moisturising to the skin.
And for the added extra? Invest in the Tan Organic self-tanning glove. It’s double sided and features a thumb-shape, making it really comfortable to wear and apply tan. The design makes it much easier to manoeuvre and gives you more control over your application. A water-resistant barrier means your hands don’t become stained and finally, it looks really cute!

Price: Tan (€19.99) Glove (€7.99) from pharmacies nationwide and http://www.tanorganic.com.

Hair Envy: Redken Wind Blown

If you know me at all then you are probably well aware that I suffer from a serious case of hair envy on a regular basis. I’m constantly undecided as to whether brunettes or blondes have more fun, therefore preferring to bounce between both, depending on the season. And I’m forever coming up with different hairstyles I wish I had the courage to try. I’m one of those people who will set off to the salon with a picture of a brand new me, and return with just a trim. Someday, I’ll suck it up and just go for it. After all, hair grows!

If anyone was lucky enough to attend the recent Beyonce concert, her talent will have probably blown you away. While that was all very impressive and all (that woman sure can dance), it was her hair that I really couldn’t help wishing I had; wild, voluminous and individualistic. Kind of like the lady herself. The cute baby and the majorly successful career would be just a bonus.

We all want to reproduce the most fashionable and trendy looks of the season, and us ladies are forever trying out the latest and greatest in hair products to achieve the celebrity and catwalk worthy looks. In doing so, I recently got my hands on some of Redken’s fashion-forward styling products and I was suitably impressed!

There’s only so much you can do with fine hair like mine, but the Redken Signature Look wind blown 05 dry finishing spray is possibly my favourite product on my beauty shelf these days, second only to my desert-island choice of mascara.

This is the ultimate product if you’re the type to go for the tousled, “I just woke up like this” kind of look. It’s an extremely light hair finisher, to be applied post blow-dry and somehow avoids any of the heavy, oily residue you often find with other finishing products.

Applying it after blow-drying your hair will help you achieve the “undone” look, yet it’s strong enough to withstand the harsher elements of the Irish weather too.

Is it too good to be true? Well, my hair is naturally straight, and I’m forever scrunching it to try and force a decent wave through it. This wind blown finishing spray was the perfect way to tousle my hair without succumbing to the dreaded ‘beachy’ look. It’s also a little secret styling weapon if you’re hoping to give a French or side plait the all-essential undone appeal.

Redken professionals also offer an extra tip for an “air-spun” effect on dry hair. Turn your head upside down and mist on wind blown liberally, before shaking out your hair, which will result in some really great volume.

For plaits, mist over your finished style and then spray a little on your fingertips and use them to gently pull random strands out.

If you’re backcombing, the wind blown finishing spray is perfect for giving your hair a little texture, without clogging it up like a dry shampoo normally does.

The Redken Signature Look wind blown 05 Dry Finishing Spray is priced at €21.30 and is available in all Redken stockists nationwide.

New Face of Lancome

Despite seeing her in 12 Years a Slave, it was the Oscars where I believe most of us saw actress Lupita Nyong’o properly for the first time. With her flawless skin, bright eyes and elegant nature, it was only a matter of time before a beauty brand snapped her right up! The award-winning actress was announced at Maison Lancôme’s newest brand ambassadress in recent weeks, where she will join the likes of Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Penélope Cruz and the recently appointed Lily Collins.

Lupita

Speaking about their brand new ambassadress, Lancôme has said their decision was down to her “instinctive and sophisticated talent” and “one of a kind” beauty.

I was surprised to learn that the actress is 31-years-old, thinking originally that she was barely scraping by her early 20’s, but Lupita has said she is “truly honoured” to become a new face for Lancôme.

“I am particularly proud to represent its unique vision for  women and the idea that beauty should not be dictated, but should instead be an expression of a woman’s freedom to be herself,” she said.

She is set to be seen from this summer onwards, in campaigns shot by star photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. Keep an eye out for her!
